An illustrated guide to 'Berlin Work' - introduced at the beginning of the last century .. a form
of canvas work, one of the oldest of all the methods of embroidery, which takes its name from the even weave
linen or canvas on which it is executed. Because the linen is strong and the background as well as the
pattern is closely covered with stitches, canvas work is extremely hard-wearing; hence its popularity
for chair covers, cushions, footstools and, during the Elizabethan period in particular, for table carpets
and bed valances.
